Choosing an Easy Guitar Song to Learn and Practice
When you are learning to play the guitar, technique is not an innate quality even though it might look like it when you watch your favourite guitarists in action especially the finger and hand movements. The thing to do is to find an easy guitar song to start with so that you can practice on it and use the song as a stepping stone for learning guitar songs which are more challenging.
Learning how to play the guitar is like learning any other instrument or any other skill for that matter, it’s the amount of practice you put in that counts. Technique and ability are part of the equation but the results from daily practicing where the hand movement around the frets and playing area, whilst all the time listening, becomes second nature combines with technical ability is the key to a top guitar player. When this has been mastered it becomes very much easier to meld your own blend of feeling and personality into your guitar sound.
Make sure the simple song you pick is one you enjoy listening to over and over again or better still one that has a neutral affect on your senses as we don’t want to ruin perfectly good songs. Picking and sticking with a particular tune and perfecting it will also create a great sense of achievement and give confidence to move forward with learning the guitar.
Much is written and talked about the options to learning the guitar and fundamentally they are to employ a guitar teacher or sign up for guitar lessons online, but whichever you choose, if a complete beginner, I would first do some basic research and get hold of a couple of good guitar books and start from there. That’s what I did and it immediately made me realise that learning to play the guitar was not going to be as straightforward as I first thought when I was influenced by the likes of Jimmy Page and Hendrix.
Discipline yourself to go through this research process first and read about the different styles of guitar as well as amps, metronomes, pitch, notation, chords, tuning and so on. It might make you hesitant, more determined or put you off – I might have put you off already – but one way or other it will prepare the way.
Whether you are being taught directly or tackling one of the better providers of online guitar lessons, after some practice with finger placement and chord basics, you will be assessing which of the easy guitar songs you’ll be using to help you set yourself the standard on which to build that guitar hero profile. This is where learning online can be very useful as the better sites should have thousands of easy guitar songs to choose from in many different categories so don’t worry if your ideal type of guitar music is a strange breed of rock / Creole as there will be examples in formats such as tab notation and video playing.
The guitar song you choose to annihilate should probably be one that fits in with the type of music you like and wish to mostly perform when you become good at playing the guitar. Although it could also be one that you want to become proficient at as quickly as possible and has some sort of meaning like you want to blow your girlfriend/boyfriend away on some special occasion. That would work as a great motivational tool and give you loads of confidence when the kisses start raining in.
There will be an ungainly awkward start to your learning especially as you learn the best way to hold the guitar and position the fingers but practice is the key and you should do it over and over.
If you can’t initially think of an easy guitar song to practice with then remember to look for repetitive chords and fortunately most popular songs these days has exactly that and once mastered you will want to find more easy songs to play and perfect.
